HOW WE GOT STARTED

Our Story

Kuʻumomialoha (right) and Makanaalohapumehana Kuahiwinui (middle) share the kuleana of teaching the haumāna of Nā Pua O Kekoʻolani. Kuʻumomialoha's kaikaina, Pumehana Silva started the hālau years ago in Puna, Moku o Keawe in honor of their mother Napualeialohaakuku Kekoʻolani. Both sisters were raised in hula by their ʻanakē Myra Kolani Chartrand in Ka Hale Hula o Kekoʻolani in Hilo.

Makana and her sister Kanani (left) are the next generation who will carry on the traditions of their Kekoʻolani ʻohana. Haumāna of all ethnic backgrounds, ages five to kupuna, each range in hula skill and experience and love to learn and share Hawaiian culture.
