Still half asleep and rubbing my maka piapia, I was completely and delightfully surprised to wake up to the bright ding of text messages and learn that a (quite large) picture of Nā Pua O Kekoʻolani was gracing the front page of the Star Advertiser.
Not even a week earlier, we had brought all of our papa hula together for practice on the pā hula at Puʻuokapolei in preparation for our performance at Island Pacific Academy's West Fest on April 1st. We are blessed and feel absolutely privileged to continue to learn and share the Hawaiian culture surrounded by such beauty as Puʻuokapolei. My mother and I make it a point to bring our haumāna to the pā hula once a month to strengthen our connection and familiarity and even more, to promote a positive presence of what this gorgeous wahi is meant for.
When I finally got a chance to sit down and read the amazing front page news story, I was filled with such pride to be in some way connected to such a powerful place and wonderful proclamation. Our community of Kapolei is alive and growing and as such we need to spread awareness of the historical significance of this puʻu and all that surrounds it here in Honouliuli.
We mahalo our community leaders such as ʻanakala Shad Kāne and Kumu Mikiʻala Lidstone of Ulu Aʻe Learning Center and Hālau Kaululauaʻe.
If you have yet to read the Star Advertiser article on the placement and distinction of the new cultural markers found at Puʻuokapolei, you can do so by clicking HERE. Mahalo nui!
